Punk

Around the time that The Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, New York Dolls and Sex Pistols were formed there were many events happening in our country. Nixon was one of the presidents around this time and was involved in the Watergate scandal. The end of the Vietnam War was in effect, which meant most people didn’t want to hear rock, but rather wanted something they could dance to. This is why rock was not as popular after the war. People wanted to have fun and enjoy life. Nixon was also one of the first presidents to do something about the rise of drug usage in the US.

Since this was a time of peace and happiness it also included a large amount of the population using drugs such as heroin, speed, and alcohol. Many rock stars including Iggy Pop, Sid Vicious, and Lou Reed. Drug use was at a high level during this time.

Punk wasn’t officially introduced until the Sex Pistols. The Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop and New York Dolls only lead the way to the music style of punk. Once Sex Pistols were formed it started a whole new culture of drugs and clothing.
